Coleus scutellarioides is a native of Asia and Australia and is part of the mint or nettle family.
Introduced to Europe by the Dutch in the 1800's from Java it proved at first an enormously popular plant to cultivate but declined in popularity being almost forgotten until being rediscovered in the 1950s by hobbyist in the USA.
Coleus are now widely cultivated in a variety of colours and shapes each year, these plants make wonderful additions to any plant collection.
Cuttings readily propogate in water. A real 'pass me on' plant, ideal for plant swaps and cute gifts for family and friends. Sometimes called the poor mans croton because of the outrageous colours and cheap price!
